A new program is expected to provide food for nearly a million school children in North Carolina this summer. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, today announced its intent to administer the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s new Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (S-EBT) Program known as “SUN Bucks.”

Starting the first day of school, Aug. 28, 2023, all BCPS students will receive breakfast and lunch for free from their school cafeteria. BCPS has adopted the Community Eligibility Provision, a school meal option for schools and districts in high-poverty areas. This eliminates the need for BCPS families to complete the free and reduced meal application and allows all students access to free meals at school.

Mr. Pedro starts his day welcoming students as their parents drop them off at school.  He is our parent educator at Mountain View Elementary School. He started working a few months after the school opened and was the first in Burke County to fill the position.  Four years later, he provides support to parents, teachers and students.
